What is Baptism with Fire?

We can read about baptism with fire in Matthew 3:10-12:

Matthew 3:10 “And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.”
Matthew 3:11 “I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:”
Matthew 3:12 “Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”

Here are 3 important points to consider in order for us to understand the passage:

  1. Notice that fire is mention in each of the 3 verses. In verse 10 and 12, fire is inarguably the punishment for the wicked. It would be absurd for the writer to suddenly change the meaning of fire in the middle of the passage.
  2. Two classes of people are clearly differentiated in verse 10 – good and bad tree, and in verse 12 – wheat and chaff.
  3. Reading verse 11 in context, we see that the righteous will be baptized with the Holy Spirit but the wicked will receive fire (of hell)
